Gnomon School of Visual Effects Unveils Gnomon Studios

Posted: 22 Jun 2010 09:48 AM PDT

Studio to Offer Hands-on Digital Entertainment Production Training for Gnomon Students, First Project Is Academy-Award Nominee Shane Acker's New Short, "Plus Minus"

LOS ANGELES--22-06-2010
--Gnomon School of Visual Effects, the industry leader in professional training for artists in the entertainment and design field, today revealed that it has established Gnomon Studios, where advanced Gnomon students prepare for professional careers by working on short films in a studio environment under the guidance and mentorship of production professionals. Gnomon Studios is currently working on Academy Award-nominated Director Shane Acker's new short film, "Plus Minus."

"While Gnomon students participate in group projects through their lab work, those projects don't necessarily reflect the real-world structure and workflow of a visual effects studio," said Alex Alvarez, founder and director of Gnomon School of Visual Effects. "Through internships at Gnomon Studios, our students are able to collaborate with renowned directors like Shane Acker on professional projects in a realistic studio environment. These projects give students invaluable experience working in roles directly linked to their career paths, which is already resulting in outstanding job placements for our recent graduates."

Class of 2010 Gnomon graduate John Patrick worked on Gnomon Studios projects while the facility was being established, and has just been hired by Sony Pictures Imageworks as a Pipeline Technical Director.

Reflecting on his recent job search, Patrick noted, "I think employers are looking for people who are good at finding solutions to problems, which is especially true in technical areas. A demo reel is a great way to get to an interview, but Gnomon Studios gave me the training to prove that I've been in a situation where I've tackled real problems and met hard deadlines. I'd imagine that it's rare to find students at other schools that have had that experience when they graduate."

Gnomon Studios is located on the Gnomon lot in the heart of Hollywood. To provide an authentic training experience, the structure of Gnomon Studios mirrors professional visual effects shops. Students work in various roles ranging from concept artists, animators, art directors and producers. Following industry production standards, the director of each project takes on the role of the external client. The director, Gnomon founder Alex Alvarez and other Gnomon instructors and staff also serve as mentors who help guide students throughout the production process.

Short films, such as Acker's "Plus Minus," will be the core production focus of Gnomon Studios. Alvarez also expects Gnomon Studios to contribute to the occasional feature project when opportunities arise, as was the case with the facility's recent contributions to the 2011 film "Green Lantern" and the popular TV series, "Fringe."

In addition to his Academy Award nomination in 2006 for his short film "9," Shane Acker also directed the full-length film by the same title released by Focus Features and Universal studios in 2009.

"The students at Gnomon Studios are learning to work at the forefront of digital production, and making a short film is a great way to explore and test what they've studied in the classroom," said Acker. "The Gnomon Studios interns are learning that it's about bending the software tools to the will of the narrative and finding creative ways to find solutions to tell the story. This practical experience and exposure to the rigors of film production is helping to prepare the interns at Gnomon Studios for the real world, giving them an advantage over other students that are coming out of school without any practical, hands-on experience."

About Gnomon School of Visual Effects

Located in Hollywood, the epicenter of the entertainment industry, Gnomon School of Visual Effects (www.gnomonschool.com) is an innovative training facility that stresses the importance of creativity in digital entertainment production. The school believes that while new software tools help to create impressive computer-generated characters and worlds, it is not the technology that drives results, but the artist. All Gnomon instructors are specialized industry professionals who bring their experience and connections into the classroom to provide an outstanding start to the careers of the next generation of leading production artists. The results speak for themselves, as the flagship Digital Entertainment Production program boasts a 90% job placement rate within three months of graduation.

Download Bokeh Background Textures

Posted: 22 Jun 2010 07:37 AM PDT

More Than 620 Bokeh Background Textures Bokeh is the term used to explain the blur, or the aesthetic quality of the blur in photography, and is usually seen in good quality macro shots, in the areas that lay outside the depth of field.

As bokeh is more than often very pleasing to the eye, photographers tend to purposely produce bokeh in their images, and sometimes deliberately take out-of-focus shots to take images that show nothing other than bokeh. Designers have picked up on this, and over the years there has been a huge increase of bokeh being used in graphic, print, and web design. This round-up consists of a whopping 626 textures, both free (the majority) and premium, which you can use to spice up your photos, as backgrounds for your latest web design, and, as most of them are high resolution, even in your print design projects.

Square Enix “still talking with Microsoft” about Final Fantasy XIV for Xbox 360

Posted: 22 Jun 2010 02:31 AM PDT

Adding to rumors earlier in the year, Final Fantasy XIV producer Hiromichi Tanaka has hinted that we may see the MMORPG hitting the Xbox 360 at some stage. Currently in development for PS3 and PC only, the title bucks the trend its online predecessor Final Fantasy XI set in creating a PS2/PC/Xbox 360 cross-platform multiplayer title.

However, Square Enix has been flirting with the Xbox 360 for some time now; sealing Microsoft exclusives with Star Ocean: The Last Hope and The Last Remnant and, more recently, breaking off Final Fantasy XIII's PS3 exclusivity in favor of a dual-platform release.

After being asked whether Final Fantasy XIV would be brought to the Xbox 360, Tanaka replied, "we are still talking with Microsoft about an Xbox 360 version, but at the moment we are only working on the PS3 version and Windows version."

It is still unclear whether this is a result of Microsoft's famously-strict Xbox Live policies, Tanaka refused to comment either way. However it is reassuring that there still is that glimmer of hope for the Xbox 360 Final Fantasy fans out there.

Final Fantasy XIV is due out on PS3 and PC by the end of the year.

Alien Skin Software Announces Exposure 3 Plug-in for Adobe Photoshop CS5 Software

Posted: 22 Jun 2010 02:20 AM PDT

Adobe Photoshop CS5 64-bit support on Mac and Windows. Tight Adobe Lightroom integration. Hundreds of new presets including aged film and funky toy camera effects.
Raleigh, North Carolina – June 22, 2010
– Alien Skin Software today announces the immediate availability of Exposure® 3, the new version of its photography effects plug-in for Adobe® Photoshop®. Exposure provides accurate film simulation and a wide range of creative effects in a simple interface.

"Exposure has grown beyond film simulation into a creativity tool, especially with the addition of Lo-Fi and vintage effects," said Tom Welsh, the architect of Exposure. "There is carefully researched science under the hood, but we keep the controls simple so photographers can focus on their art."

"Alien Skin Software is helping Exposure users get the most out of Photoshop CS5 by quickly adopting 64-bit support", said Bryan O'Neil Hughes, product manager for Photoshop at Adobe.

The most significant new features in Exposure 3 are:

* 64-bit support for Photoshop CS5 on both Macintosh and Windows
* Tight Lightroom® integration that does not require Photoshop
* Aging effects and vintage films such as Technicolor and old Kodachrome
* Simulation of Lo-Fi toy camera photography
* Hundreds of new settings in all categories, including more films, color toning, and aging
* User interface improvements such as a much faster preview and hover help

Tight Integration with Adobe Photoshop and Lightroom

Exposure 3 now works in Lightroom 2, including batch processing, and does not require Photoshop to be installed. Exposure 3 is one of the first plug-ins to work with the 64-bit version of Photoshop CS5 on both the Macintosh and Windows platforms. Exposure provides multiple techniques for non-destructive editing in Photoshop, including Smart Filter support and rendering effects on a duplicate of the original layer.

Creative Effects

Exposure brings all of the creative tools of film photography to the world of digital, such as discontinued films, dark room tricks, and lo-fi camera quirks. New in version 3 are vintage looks like Technicolor movie film and old Kodachrome that are distressed with dust, scratches, and vignettes to complete the illusion of age. Lo-Fi cameras like Holga and Lomo are simulated with lens blur, warped vignettes, and funky colors from cross processing.

Realistic Film Simulation

Exposure was developed through careful measurements of film grain and color both in the lab and in film archives. The result is grain that clumps realistically, unlike the uniform digital noise generated by other software. The color transformations of particular film stocks are done so well that Exposure can make your digital shots look exactly like stills from a vintage movie or snapshots in an old family album.

Ease of Use

Exposure 3 has over 500 presets that provide complex looks with a single click. To help get started and for advanced techniques, the Web site has a large library of tutorial videos and example images.

Pricing and Availability

Exposure 3 sells for $249 USD. Owners of any version of Exposure may upgrade for $99 USD. Online or physical delivery is available through the Alien Skin website at www.alienskin.com. Free upgrades will be automatically sent to purchasers of Exposure 2 who purchased in April 2010 or later.

Host Requirements

Exposure 3 is a plug-in and requires one of the following host applications:

  • Adobe Photoshop CS3 or later
  • Adobe Lightroom 2 or later
  • Adobe Photoshop Elements 7 or later
  • Corel Paint Shop Pro Photo X3

System Requirements

Microsoft Windows users must have at least a Pentium 4 processor or compatible and Windows XP SP3 or later. Apple Macintosh users must have an Intel processor and Mac OS X 10.5 or later. A monitor with 1024x768 resolution or greater is required.

Artie | A Turnkey Solution for Small to Mid-Size Studios

Posted: 21 Jun 2010 09:54 PM PDT

6U enclosure with a single PCoIP workstation, 2X RenderStream Ridiculous Speed 4 render farm and a switch shown above. 4U, 6U, 12U and 24U enclosures available depending on needs.
RenderStream is pleased to announce Artie, a highly scalable and secure turnkey solution targeted for small to mid-size production houses. Modeled after Omnia, Artie is designed to easily scale up as your business grows. Everything you need to succeed is housed in a small easy to manage, highly secure rack. In the simplest configuration , Artie can be configured with a single rack mounded workstation and RenderStream's Ridiculous Speed render farm. In the most advanced configuration, Artie can come complete with PCoIP workstations, PCoIP compositing workstations, a RenderStream renderfarm, Qube! Supervisor Server, switches and UPS.

All of the Artie's components easily stack in a small enclosure thus reducing unnecessary hardware clutter in your office. And like Artie's big brother Omnia, Artie can be shipped to your facility fully wired with your desired software pre installed allowing you to get up and running in no time.

Lets examine the key features of Artie..

Scalability:
Let's say for example your are a freelance artist or a small 1-5 person production studio. You are currently seeing an increasing workload and it's becoming clear you need to upgrade your hardware. You are starting to have issues with long render times and jobs waiting in queue. Your current workload dictates you might need to hire additional artists in the near future. If any of that sounds familiar, you should consider Artie as it can be configured to accommodate your current workload, while leaving plenty space to add additional workstations and render nodes. Artie is designed to grow with your business.

Artie is available in 4U, 6U (Shown above), 12U and 24U enclosures. If you feel your needs require a larger enclosure, please take a look at RenderStream Omnia.

Extremely Quiet:
We realize many of you don't have a dedicated server room, especially those who work in a home office. Even with only a few workstations and a small render farm, the sound from your hardware can be a distraction, particularly when cranking out renders at full load. Artie's enclosure is designed to reduce the housed hardware noise by up to 80%. No more distractions.

Optional PCoIP Workstations
Artie has the option to take advantage of PCoIP technology just like with RenderStream Omnia. PCoIP technology allows your studio's workstations and compositors to be centrally managed in a local server room or data center. Depending on your office setup, you may have a sever room or you may not. The main point is that with PCoIP, Artie doesn't have have to be in the same room as you. It could be in the adjacent room, down the hall or on the other side of the world.

The technology provides an uncompromising 3D production experience and IP security. Even though your workstation isn't right next to you, panning, zooming and manipulating objects in view ports, or scrubbing 4k animation footage on your compositor has virtually no noticeable lag. The work never leaves the "data center" without your control, so if you use consultants they can securely work with you from transcontinental distances provided typical high speed data pipes are available.

With multi monitor support for high resolution 3D graphics and HD media, you will never know your hardware is in an isolated server room. To make the experience even more seamless, local mouse pointer software can be installed so that there is no lag whatsoever when moving the cursor on screen, thus making the signal lag less noticeable when interacting with 3D objects.

Note: It you plan to keep Artie right next to you, PCoIP may not be necessary.

Compact:
Everything in one place. Workstations, renderfarm, switches, compositors and UPS (If necessary). Cut down on hardware clutter and yards of cords and cable in your studio or home office.

Ready to Use:
Artie is a turnkey solution and can be shipped fully wired with the software of your choice pre-installed, production ready. Please inquire for more information.

Artie will require a custom configuration for each customer. Prices start at $14,500 and scale up as more components are added. For additional pricing info and quotes, please contact us at 512-850-4098 or email info@renderstream.com

STEELE studios kicks off the World Cup with Shakira in Stereo3D and a new Pablo

Posted: 21 Jun 2010 09:16 PM PDT

(Newbury, UK--June 21, 2010) Full service post house STEELE studios has installed a Quantel Pablo 4K to handle its rapidly growing DI, FX, beauty and Stereo3D business. The well known boutique has teamed up with Sony and DNA to kick off the 2010 FIFA World Cup in style with the official music video for the World Cup song 'Waka Waka' (Time for Africa), performed by Shakira and featuring Freshlyground.

One of the highlights of the tournament's opening ceremony and watched by hundreds of millions of viewers around the world, 'Waka Waka' was finished by Jerry Steele on STEELE's brand new Quantel Pablo 4K. Not only is it the first ever Stereo3D video to be shown at the World Cup, it is also one of the world's first Stereo3D music videos and instantly achieved worldwide recognition - it has already been viewed over 13 million times on YouTube alone.

The video was produced by DNA under the direction of Marcus Raboy for Sony Music Entertainment. The video has a strong party atmosphere with crowds dancing and singing along to the Waka waka and features footballers Gerard Pique, Dani Alves, Lionel Messi and Carlos Kameni It also features a 'highlights reel' of some of the great moments in World Cup soccer over the last few decades. "The video was shot by Vince Pace (Avatar and many other notable 3D stereo projects including Titantic in 3D) using camera systems developed by them for 3D stereo capture," said Jo Steele, STEELE studios joint founder and Executive Producer. "There's no room for mistakes when shooting 3D and having Pace film the video guaranteed that the very best footage would be made available."

"We had to finish a 3D version, 2D English, and Spanish versions. The 3D version is also being shown in Sony's 3D World pavilion in Nelson Mandela Square, Sandton, and will be shown in 3D on Bravia sets in Sony stores around the world.

"We did all the conforms and multi-format edits for the different versions on the Pablo. The visual effects, color correction and beauty were done on the Pablo and the IQ. The 3D convergence and ultimate mastering was completed on the Pablo. All our Quantel systems were utilised for this project and they worked very efficiently side-by-side," Steele continued. "We used 2D elements to make 3D floating panels of historical soccer footage in order to weave the 2D footage into the 3D edit without losing the 3D feel. Even though we worked right up to the wire to meet the ambitious deadline the end result is much more than a music video, and we're very proud that it has received such a fantastic reception all over the world."

Quantel is leading the way in the stereoscopic market and the stereo tools available in the Pablo make the handling of 3D a breeze," Steele added.

STEELE studios' reputation for producing the very highest quality imagery for its clients is attracting ever-increasing business, and the purchase of the Pablo is part of a planned organic expansion of STEELE's Culver City facilities. A DI theatre is also being added, together with two additional compositing and online bays. "We will continue working in commercials, movies, Stereo3D and music videos and fully expect to need more staff and more Quantel systems," Steele continued.

"3D has only just begun. The depth of the market is equal to all the media that we see today in 2D. We will be focussing our attention on as many different applications for 3D as we can find," Steele concluded. "We have the best solution for mixed format mastering and the industry leader in Stereo at our disposal, so no areas of the market are unattainable for us."
