OptiTrack Demonstrates the Future of Virtual Filmmaking at SIGGRAPH 2010

Posted: 19 Jul 2010 09:09 AM PDT

Showcases How to Produce an Affordable Virtual Production Workflow; Offers Hands-on Experience with a Virtual Camera System

Corvallis, Ore. - July 19, 2010 - With the massive success of computer-generated 3D films like "Avatar," real-time virtual production workflows are setting a new trend in Hollywood. At SIGGRAPH 2010, OptiTrack™, in conjunction with Autodesk, will provide attendees with a demonstration of how to create a cost-effective virtual production pipeline that will easily integrate into existing workflows. Live demonstrations featuring OptiTrack and Autodesk products will be available at the OptiTrack booth (#701) and Autodesk booth (#500), July 26 - 29, 2010 at the Los Angeles Convention Center.

Featuring real-time data streamed between the OptiTrack and Autodesk booths, joint demonstrations will showcase how body motion capture (from OptiTrack ARENA™ software) and virtual camera work (from the OptiTrack Insight VCS) can be combined with Autodesk MotionBuilder, Autodesk Maya, Autodesk 3ds Max and Autodesk Face Robot to create a comprehensive computer generated film sequence. Demonstration attendees will also be able to:

  • See and use a productized version of the Insight VCS, a virtual camera system similar to the one used for the movie "Avatar"

  • Learn how to combine a motion capture solution with Autodesk software to create a production-quality pipeline
  • Understand how to integrate body, face and virtual camera animation with character and environment models to create a cohesive and compelling computer graphics (CG) film sequence in a short amount of time
  • "We've been working closely with Autodesk to demonstrate a powerful, yet simple virtual production workflow," said Jim Richardson, NaturalPoint® co-founder and lead engineer for the OptiTrack motion capture line. "This relationship has allowed us to create a pipeline that can be easily replicated with minimal investment. We are looking forward to demonstrating it next week; it should be impressive."

    Pricing and Availability
The Insight VCS will ship in late summer 2010. Pricing for the camera rig ranges from $199 USD to $5,000 USD. Software plug-ins to MotionBuilder and Maya for OptiTrack systems are $1,000 USD. Universal plug-ins for other motion capture systems are $2,000 USD.

    MARI 1.0v1 is now available

    Posted: 18 Jul 2010 07:50 PM PDT

    >>> More Mari recorded

16 July 2010 today Foundry announced that the first release of MARI available for purchase.

MARI is a creative texture-painting tool that can handle extreme projects. MARI was developed at Weta Digital to handle the massively complex, highly detailed look development work demanded of the texture department by projects such as District 9, The Lovely Bones, and Avatar.

MARI has a creative toolset which puts many stand-alone 2D paint systems to shame, allowing artists to concentrate on painting. The user interface is responsive and fluid. You can paint directly on to models and view the results immediately. Save time and take texturing way beyond what was previously possible.

MARI's unrivalled ability to deal with colossal textures in vast numbers allows their development in intense detail

    Speed

Save time and money by seeing the results of your work immediately. Cut down on revisions. Wave goodbye to the paint, render, review, rinse, repeat cycle of old. Load all the textures for a model into MARI simultaneously and remove the need to split up models.

    Paint

A creative painting toolset second to none, focused on the artists' needs. With a paintbrush engine finessed under intense production pressure, MARI releases artists from arbitrary restraints and allows them to work naturally with the model.

    Context

In VFX work, context is everything. What the model will look like in motion, from multiple angles and against the background plate, is critical. MARI lets the artists see the model in context and paint on it right there.

    Animation

Textures channels need to change over time. Whether it is a blushing maiden or scratched and dented armour, animating textures are a crucial part of what makes a model appear real. MARI lets you animate and paint your texture channels frame by frame.

    Workflow

Efficient Integration into a complex workflow turns a great product into a powerhouse. MARI has an open and extensible approach to UI, geometry, cameras and shading, and runs on Linux. It supports colour management, light and texture change, while import and export happen in the background.

    User Interface

A clear and intuitive user interface allows artists to focus on what is important. User-configurable tool shelves allow them to organise their workspace efficiently, and a customisable real-time 3D shader lets them see what they're doing.

    What does 'mari' mean?

MARI comes from the Swahili Maridadi meaning both 'beautiful' and also carrying connotations of 'usefulness'.

    • Customisable tool 'shelves' for brushes, colours, reference images, sharable between artist and projects
    • Floating point, 16 bit or 8 bit channels
    • All painting and shading tools are available in 3D projection paint mode and 'flat' UV paint mode
    • Background plates for reference

    • Supports large textures up to 32K x 32K pixels
    • Handles thousands of textures per model, over many channels
    • Seamlessly supports hundreds of UV texture patches
    • Handles animated geometry and animated textures
    • Isolate, select, mask and hide geometry per patch and face
    • Customisable lighting and rendering modes
    • Massive geometry and texture data sets not limited by the amount of RAM

    Workflow

    • Linux
    • High quality turntable rendering
    • Flatten and round-trip projected textures for modifying externally (for example in NUKE or Adobe© Photoshop©)
    • Open and extensible approach to UI, geometry, camera, shading, and supporting light and texture exchange
    • Import and export as background tasks, allowing the artist to continue painting
    • Embedded web browser for help, documentation and access to reference image library
