Cause an Effect launches in Los Angeles

Posted: 17 Jun 2010 12:17 PM PDT

Santa Monica, CA, June 15, 2010: A team of long-time collaborators from London and Los Angeles, Creative Director Nick Piper, Visual Effects Artist Tim Rudgard, Make VFX and Vendetta Post, have joined forces to form CAUSE AN EFFECT.

Creative Director Nick Piper combines years of directorial experience with a deep understanding of effects to lead the new VFX team. In addition to his role at CAUSE AN EFFECT, Piper is a director at L.A.'s Backyard Productions where he has directed spots for Nissan, Cadillac, AT&T, GMC, Coors and many other top brands. Piper developed his skills as a digital artist over nearly twenty years in creative roles at MPC (London), Novocom and a52, creating award-winning effects for Pepsi, Reebok and Budweiser, as well as music videos for Michael Jackson, Madonna, Lenny Kravitz and other artists.

To head CAUSE AN EFFECT's 2D department Piper crossed the pond to recruit award-winning Flame artist and visual effects supervisor Tim Rudgard, who has relocated to L.A. from London's Golden Square Post. His 13-year career has focused primarily on commercials and promo work — creating BDA/Promax award winning on-air imagery for the BBC Worldwide Network, Deutsche Well Network and other media channels and as lead compositor for commercial campaigns including Mazda, Eristoff Vodka, a Cannes award-winning MasterCard spot, a CAD award-winning music video for Kylie Minogue and other projects. Rudgard also honed his feature film skills on "Lord of the Rings: Return of the King" which garnered an Oscar for Best Visual Effects.

To handle executive producing responsibilities and give CAUSE AN EFFECT a solid infrastructure Piper looked to his collaborator of more than fifteen years, Sandy Beladino, co-founder of Vendetta Post. Formed in 2002 by Beladino and Andrea Bygrave the company contributes post-production management prowess, a talented team of compositors, and the high-end Santa Monica studio where CAUSE AN EFFECT has made its home.

"There's a wealth of experience and talent behind this company," said Beladino. "Nick's background both as Flame Artist and as a commercial effects director makes him an extraordinarily knowledgeable creative director. If I were anywhere near the age of retirement I'd postpone it just to work with Nick again."

3D and animation expertise comes to CAUSE AN EFFECT by way of an alliance with Los Angeles' Make VFX, a boutique that contributes years of expertise in commercial and feature film visual effects with artists who cut their teeth at Digital Domain and Buf. Their commercial work includes Volkswagen, Dell, Toyota, Goodyear, AutoTrader, Duracell, Nintendo, and NBA spots.

"The CAUSE AN EFFECT team fits together incredibly well," says Piper. "We all like to work hard and we all like to have fun doing it. From concept thumbnails to final delivery, I'm excited to show our clients a fresh approach to visual effects."

CAUSE AN EFFECT is currently creating visual effects for a :30 TV spot Nick Piper is directing for Japanese agency Hakuhodo to lauch the new Nissan Elgrand luxury vehicle in Japan.

About CAUSE AN EFFECT
CAUSE AN EFFECT is a team of long-time collaborators who have worked together across oceans and decades, finally joining in Los Angeles to create visual effects for commercial productions. Their combined creative work spans SuperBowl ads and Cannes Lion awards; spots for brands including Pepsi, Toyota and Apple; music videos for Michael Jackson, Kylie Minogue and Lenny Kravitz; clients including GSD&M, TBWA/Chiat Day and J. Walter Thompson and more than we can list here. Visit them in Santa Monica or at www.causeaneffect.tv

Posted: 17 Jun 2010 11:56 AM PDT

Language : English
Paperback : 292 pages [ 235mm x 191mm ]
Release Date : April 2010
ISBN : 1849510407
ISBN 13 : 978-1-849510-40-0
Author(s) : Michel J. Anders

Blender 3D is a popular, open source modeling package that can produce photo-realistic 3D images and animations. Automating tasks and extending the functionality of an extensive application like Blender will streamline your workflow and make the impossible possible. However, implementing scripts may be daunting.

This book takes a practical step-by-step approach to implementing Python scripts that cover almost all areas of Blender. It clearly outlines each problem and focuses on straightforward, easy-to-understand code, highlighting the common pitfalls and Blender idiosyncrasies. It guides you from the installation process and the creation of a simple object to elaborate, fully rigged models with vertex groups and materials all the way to extending Blender's built-in editor. It also teaches how to implement a simple web server inside Blender to serve rendered images. This book will take you from a clear problem description to a fully functional program. The focus is on finding your way in Blender's vast array of possibilities and getting things done without losing too much time on programming details. Each script is carefully explained to provide insight that can be reused in other projects.

This practical book will help you gain control over all the aspects of Blender using the Python programming language

What you will learn from this book :

* Discover what can be accomplished in Blender with the help of Python
* Explore built-in modules and add an object to a Blender scene
* Create configurable mesh objects and modify them
* Define and enhance vertex group and add modifiers to an object
* Explore scriptlinks and spacehandlers and perform activities on each frame change in an animation
* Manipulate IPOs and act on frame changes
* Build a web server delivering CAPTCHA challenges and archive unreferenced assets
* Develop custom shaders and slope-dependent materials
* Animate objects with complex constraints and relations and automate rendering
* Extend Blender's image manipulation
* Create simple and effective user interfaces

Approach

The focus of the book is on practical problems and how to solve them in Python. The examples given are useful programs that try to solve real-world needs. Each chapter revolves around a single concept giving several examples gradually growing in difficulty. Each section analyses the problem first before diving into coding and gives extensive background information to enable the reader to generalize from the specific problem to a wider range of challenges. The sample code is provided as fully working examples with all key issues extensively highlighted. All sample programs are clear and concise yet nothing essential is left out and the programming style focuses on readability rather than on stylistic rigor or efficiency.

Who this book is written for

This book is for users comfortable with Blender as a modeling and rendering tool who want to expand their skills to include Blender scripting to automate laborious tasks and achieve results otherwise impossible. Blender experience is essential as is some experience in Python programming.

Gears of War 3 from E3

Posted: 17 Jun 2010 01:34 AM PDT

Peter Rizkalla reported from E3

"Gears of War 3 was one of the top games on my list to check out during the show.

Today I was able to spend some time with the developers checking out some of the newest features in Gears 3. The first and most interesting feature is what is called Beast Mode which is a deathmatch that allows players to play as various Locust beasts. Players can take control of Wretches, Tickers, Boomers, Grinders and various new locust species'. As you progress through the game, more Locust species will be unlocked for use in Beast mode such as the Berserker. Yes, the Berserker will be playable! Players will remember fighting against the Berserker in Gears 1 and will also remember that she is actually blind. Well you can't very well play as a character that is completely blind so the developers created a visual impairment when players play as the Berserker.

The story driven campaign promises to have four players all be able to play through the entire story at the same time. The devs made sure to emphasis that it's not that co-op players only play through certain parts of the campaign; no, everyone plays through the whole thing. New manoeuvres have been added such as new executions where you rip off an enemies arm and beat them to death with it. Players can also execute new manoeuvres with enemies that are being used as a meat shield; you can now plunge a frag grenade into the skull of an enemy that has been taken as a meat shield and them kick that enemy (grenade and all) towards another enemy to blow them both up. It's beautiful!

Gears of War 3 is slated to release sometime in 2011. When asked if this will be released for PC the devs basically said that it hasn't been ruled out but don't hold your breath."
