3ds Max 2011 Quicksilver GPU-accelerated MetaSL renderer

Posted: 25 Mar 2010 11:13 AM PDT

Ken Pimentel is the Director of Visual Communication Solutions within Autodesk's Media & Entertainment division, responsible for guiding 3ds Max, Project Newport, Mudbox, ImageModeler, Stitcher and FBX solutions. Ken holds a BS of Electrical and Computer Engineering degree from the University of California at Davis and is the coauthor of the book "Virtual Reality: Through the New Looking Glass. He has just posted the article
"Quicksilver details revealed "
So from this article we will get the key technology/ Features of Quicksilver includes:
- Use of MetaSL shaders
- Sophisticated shadowing system including adaptive shadow map creation (provides fine detail of shadows in large scenes)
- Photometric lights
- Indirect Lighting simulation (not screen space like 3ds Max 2010, emulates effects of indirect lighting)
- Reflections of dynamic objects (non-raytraced)
- Ambient Occlusion (screen-space)
- DOF (shader effect)
- Motion blur (from camera passes)
- Hardware and software based anti-aliasing and supersampling
- Alpha and Z-buffer render elements
- Larger-than-screen resolutions
- Hundreds of dynamic lights (if you have enough GPU for this)
- Floating point render pipeline with tone-mapping
- Support for Backburner (you better have the same GPU on each node or you'll get unpredictable results)
- Multi-threaded CPU optimization

Examples:

Harry Storbacka's Digital Artist 1.0

Posted: 25 Mar 2010 09:59 AM PDT

HSDA 1.0 has been released. HSDA is a 2D digital painting application with functionality for painting in perspective.

FEATURE

1. Get the perspective right!

Start by defining the vanishing points. This is done by rotating a set of cubes to find the desired point of view. More than one set of vanishing points can be used to represent different rotations.

The 3D cursor keeps you aware of the perspective by showing the lines eminating from the vanishing points. Brush strokes can be locked to any of the vanishing points. When you draw, the brush is scaled by the distance to the vanishing point creating an instant depth effect.
2. Freehand drawing in perspective!

Besides straight lines in perspective, you can also draw freehand. To draw freehand in perspective, select two vanishing points at once. The brush will be scaled automatically making your brush strokes merge with the scene. Without perspective scaling strokes define invisible billboards facing the viewer head on, often destroying the sense of depth in the image.
3. Select the right color at once!

Getting the brush color right has traditionally been a process of trial and failure. Digital Artist solves this problem by showing a preview of the color on the image:

When you change the color in the color dialog, the preview on the image changes accordingly. This allows you to see what the color will look like in the place you intend to use it.

4. Selecting brushes is fast and easy

Each brush contains tags that hint at its possible uses. A brush suitable for painting clouds has the tag "Clouds" and by clicking the tag in the selector you see all brushes with the specified tag:

After using a brush in your painting, you can quickly find the brush again from the "used brushes" tab in the brush selector.

Shortcuts for commonly used tags can be added to the sidebar of the brush selector. This lets you access your favourite brushes with just a few clicks.

When you save your work, the used brushes will be saved in the image. This enables you to take your work with you, without having to worry about not having the used brushes available.
5. Create your own brushes with the brush editor!

Custom brushes enable you to easily texture things, add detail and expressiveness to your works. With the included brush editor you can create your own brushes:

Brushes consist of bitmaps and frames. Bitmaps provide the images, and frames specify how the bitmaps are drawn. A frame contains parameters such as scale, rotation, opacity and spacing. By building a sequence of frames you can get astonishing brush strokes with just a single bitmap - imagine what you could do with two!
6. Masks in perspective!

The vanishing points of your image can also be used to create masks.
Combine masks with some brushwork and gradients and you have a very powerful tool at your disposal:

Additionally you can save the masks for later use. Shown below is the mask dialog:
7. The user interface that doesn't get in your way!

All commonly used tool windows, such as the color and brush selectors, are only shown when you need them. Bringing up one of the dialogs is only a matter of hitting one of the function keys (F1-F8). Another press of the same key makes the dialog go away again.

The user interface lets you focus on your work and thus makes you more productive. Digital Artist maximizes your workspace and minimizes the time spent accessing common functions. To maximize your focus on painting, hit F11 for full-screen editing.

8. Gradients - also in perspective!

The gradient tool allows you to draw color gradients on your image. Gradients can be straight or triangular, with the tip at one of the vanishing points of your image.

The easy to use gradient editor allows you to make new gradients and to edit existing ones:
9. See the proportions of your image before you create it!

The proportions of the image affect a lot what the final piece will look like. Start by selecting the right proportions, don't do it as an afterthought. The "Create New Image" dialog provides visual feedback as you adjust the proportions before image creation.
10. Separate undo-stack for mask operations!

The mask tools have their own undo stack - used only when one of the mask tools is selected. You can revert to an earlier mask using undo even after a long period of painting.

Depth Of Field With 3DSMax & Photoshop

Posted: 25 Mar 2010 09:23 AM PDT

Depth of Field is a cool effect that lets you bring focus to particular objects in the scene and blurring the rest of the background and foreground. Depth of Field (DOF) works according to Z, so distance is one of the important settings.

In this tutorial Hani Mohammadi is not going to talk about DOF technique in mental ray or Scanline , just going to show the compositional way for simulating this effect with 3ds Max and Photoshop. In this way you just need to render your scene and then you can try out different distances for DOP. This way can be useful for style rendering and save a lot of time if you want to show different distances to your client.

Unwrella 2.10

Posted: 25 Mar 2010 07:56 AM PDT

Unwrella is now available in version 2.10 for Autodesk 3ds Max.

This new version of Unwrella enhances the plug-in's functionality with optional automatic seam placements based on the mesh's topology. Depending your specific requirements you can add seems in grooves of your mesh where they won't be seen or you can add seams to ridges on the surface to assist with shapes that have hard angles, for example architectural meshes.

Changes in Unwrella 2.10:

  • Added support for Autodesk 3ds Max 2011 and Autodesk 3ds Max Design 2011.
  • Added the option to place automatic seams at grooves in the mesh where they are better hidden.
  • Added the option to place automatic seams at ridges in the mesh to provide clear cuts for hard surface models.
  • Source map channel from which seams are kept can now be different to target channel. This allows you to create multiple different unwraps for your mesh with ease.
  • Simplified user interface to make using the plug-in even more intuitive.
  • Enhanced unwrap results for specific cases. This results in less fragmentation of coherent surfaces.

Unwrella 2 Quads support

The Unwrella unwrapping plug-in for Autodesk 3ds Max 9, 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2011 is now available for sale and as a freely downloadable trial version on its homepage: http://www.unwrella.com

For all Maya users:
A corresponding new version of Unwrella for Autodesk Maya will be released shortly.
Unwrella 2 Quads support

Unwrella 2 Quads support

Unwrella was developed for the high demands of graphics designers in real world production environments and provides a fast, simple and reliable unwrapping solution. It is the first tool of this kind on the market, allowing the unwrapping of 3d models to be done with a single mouse click while simultaneously providing optimal results that combine the minimized texture stretching of automated unwrapping techniques with the efficient space utilization and chunk distribution of UV space that is achieved with manual pelt wrapping methods. This allows users to quickly solve complex tasks like the creation of seamless 3d models, more accurate lightmaps and productive subsequent processing of the UV maps in other 3d applications like ZBrush or Mudbox.
