full-day event: The Making of Avatar Posted: 18 Mar 2010 02:05 AM PDT Gnomon is proud to host a free, full-day event with several of the artists responsible for the ground breaking film Avatar! This event will cover design and technology with a wide array of never before seen artwork, shot breakdowns and Q&A. The Design of Avatar: 10:00 am – 1:00 pm Topics covered during the Design portion will include the design of various elements of Avatar, including characters, creatures, vehicles, props, sets and the world of Pandora. Featuring presentations from: Robert Stromberg /Production Designer Followed by Lunch: 1:00 pm – 2:00 pm A free lunch will be provided. The Technology of Avatar: 2:00 pm – 5:00 pm Presenters will discuss the technology used in creating Avatar. Topics will include motion capture and animation and integration techniques, real-time virtual filmmaking, and live action/augmented reality integration. Each presenter will cover their responsibilities and show behind the scenes footage related to their work. Using Real Flow, the workshop will cover many of the concepts of simulating fluids such as water and lava, including more jellow and latex type of textures. Participating students will gain a true understanding of Real Flow, how it works and how to push Real Flow beyond its limits. By using industry techniques and approaches to create actual visual effects shots students will learn how to optimize, speed up their simulations and utilize the simulated information later in their 3D package of choice. Real flow has been used on many high profile films, such as Benjamin Button, 2012, GI Joe, Ice Age 3, Watchmen, Avatar, Lord of the Rings and many more! It is the industry standard for simulating fluids for film, game cinematics and many other special projects. And an essential skill to master for any industry established FX TD's, or up and coming FX animators. This workshop is aimed at both experienced FX artists wanting to get a better handle of Real Flow, as well as enthusiastic FX artists wanting to get hands on experience.
