Cornucopia3D Contest: Glorious Gardens Posted: 05 Apr 2010 02:47 AM PDT Glorious Gardens!Inspiring, colorful, relaxing, beautiful, amazing...gardens are wonderful places where we can experience the wonders of nature. Going back thousands of years, in cultures around the world, it seems to be a part of human nature to plant flowers and trees, and surround ourselves with the sights, sounds, and smells of a garden! Ancient Romans were devoted to their gardens, and even today, apartment dwellers create miniature gardens on their windowsills. This month, celebrate the great (and not so great!) outdoors with us, and show us your ideal Glorious Gardens! Maybe it's an ancient Egyptian garden, an oasis in the desert, or a lovely Arabic or Oriental garden, or a small, intimate and color-filled cottage garden; wherever your imagination leads you, bring your garden to life! All month, our great brokered artists will be sending great, garden-themed goodies your way, and watch for our special offers, as you never know what kind of terrific stuff will go on sale! New Creative Character Design Techniques with Neville Page Posted: 05 Apr 2010 01:39 AM PDT This week, The Gnomon Workshop announces the release of a new creature design DVD by concept artist Neville Page. Through his experience on such films as Avatar, Star Trek and Cloverfield, to name a few, Neville has developed a variety of approaches for creature and character development. In this lecture, initially created for a Master Class series at Gnomon School of Visual Effects, Neville explains and demonstrates an approach for developing character concepts through a process of fostering "happy accidents". He shows how to apply his technique for working loosely and "finding an image within", using Photoshop and ZBrush and resulting in a sculpted ZBrush sketch. "If a brand new form of life was discovered on Earth, and only one artist could illuminate the masses, it would be Neville Page." Rick O'Brien DVD Description: In this DVD, Neville offers alternative approaches to developing ideas, specifically for character concept development. There are times you want to approach a project with great specificity and then other times you want to put aside presumption and allow for "it" to happen to you. This DVD explores a few approaches to fostering "happy accidents" and ways to efficiently "see" quickly. Neville begins in Photoshop®, very quickly sketching random shapes and areas of value to "find" an image within. After discovering an intriguing image, he takes it to near completion, revealing the importance of staying open to new ideas as he develops a creature. From there he explores the same ideas for head and creature development using ZBrush's mirroring tool. Finally, he finishes with a sculpted ZBrush "sketch" showing ways to keep creativity alive while working in 3D. Instructor Bio: Neville Page was educated at the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California. Although his major was product design, he has always gravitated towards entertainment. With the combination of his education and personal interests, Neville has found himself involved with quite a variety of projects from creature design and sculpture to conceptual design and engineering. His clients have included Universal Studios, Warner Bros., 20th Century Fox, Mattel and BMW to name just a few. He has worked on such feature films as Minority Report, Planet of the Apes, X-Men 2 & 3, The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe, Superman Returns, James Cameron's Avatar, J.J. Abrams' Cloverfield, Zack Snyder's The Watchmen, Louis Leterrier's The Hulk, and J.J. Abrams' Star Trek. Neville has also taught at the Art Center College of Design (Pasadena and Switzerland), Otis College, Gnomon and corporate workshops. This title is available as digital download and is also featured in GNOMON's training subscription plans.Creative Character Design Techniques with Neville Page Related links: thegnomonworkshop.com |

Adobe Photoshop CS5 at Photoshop World 2010 Posted: 04 Apr 2010 08:54 PM PDT Adobe Photoshop CS5 is easily the biggest elephant in the room at Photoshop World 2010. Several of the NAPP and Adobe crew members have been working with Adobe Photoshop CS5 and dropped several hints about new features throughout the first day, along with a wink and a nudge. Video 2 – Russell Brown has demonstrated the Puppet Warp technology being developed for Adobe Photoshop CS5 Adobe Photoshop CS5 – Puppet Warp Sneak PeakRussell Brown has demonstrated the Puppet Warp technology being developed for Adobe Photoshop CS5: Cool as everyone seems to agree the technology is, I know there's a tendency to worry that it's kind of frivolous–maybe useful only occasionally, and then for making some extreme change to an image. Fortunately that's not the case. Stick with the demo to see Russell show (around the 5-minute mark) how the features can also be used to make subtle adjustments to photos. (Taken together with Content-Aware Fill, automatic lens correction, and the ability to address huge amounts of memory thanks to 64-bit, I think panorama creators will be very happy with what's cooking.) Posted: 04 Apr 2010 08:47 PM PDT Roberto Scopigno, Chair of Eurographics gives tribute to Dirk Bartz as the ACM SIGGRAPH and Eurographics Community mourns the death of one of its members. "It is with great sadness that I have to inform you that a colleague, a long-time community member and a friend of many of us, Dirk Bartz, died on Sunday doing one of the things he liked most: running half-marathons. He leaves behind a wife and two young children. Dirk was the author and driving force of many important results in medical visualization research. The research he coordinated, both at Tuebingen and more recently at Leipzig, created cutting edge results and is of clear relevance at the EU level and beyond. He has also been extremely active by coordinating many EG activities (including chairing workshops and the EG Medical Prize). I would express my profound condolences to Dirk's family, both personally and on behalf of the EG Association. We will miss him a lot." Related links: siggraph.org |
